How The Fund Works
With over 60 years of support for our members in the transport
industry, you know you can rely on us to be there for you. Your
fortnightly contributions maintain a pool of funds. Benefits are
allocated to members and their families when it’s most needed.
The Fund picks up the shortfalls where insurance or other compensation
leaves off. All assistance, financial or otherwise, is confidential,
timely and allows the person to accept any support with dignity.
Membership contributions are only $2.50 per week,
deducted from your wage or salary. Coverage for less than the
cost of a cup of coffee a week!
To claim
for assistance, you simply make
an application, which is then reviewed and assessed. We get
back to you with an answer as quickly as possible.
Our History
The Welfare Fund has a long history, dating back to WWII, when
a ‘Comfort Fund’ was run to meet the charitable needs
of railway men and women and defence force service people. Due
to it’s success, a committee of representatives was formed
and the “Railway Employees Patriotic and Welfare Fund’
was formed, with contributions of threepence a week by members.
In 1986 the Fund changed its name to the NSW Railway
Employees Welfare Fund when it registered under the Charitable
Collections Act. However, the Fund was still committed to assisting
returned service people and their families, as well as railway
workers. The first Annual General Meeting of the Fund was held
in November 1992.
On 26 July 1996 the Fund became an incorporated
association in accordance with members’ wishes. In December
2006, the name of the Fund was changed to The Welfare Fund Inc,
following focus groups and surveys intended to broaden the scope
of membership and to introduce services to meet contemporary requirements.
